This has just enough reduction to shave the top notes from the nose where hints of earth and dark berries can still be discerned. Otherwise there is terrific punch, detail and power to the tautly muscular, vibrant and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are supported by very firm tannins on the ever-so-mildly austere and gorgeously persistent finale. As is often the case with this wine, it's both restrained and compact at present but everything is in place such that it should age beautifully. In a word, excellent. - BH

The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru lives up to its superb showing from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, wild plums, rose petals, spices and loamy soil. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's elegantly muscular, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and a broad framing of rich, powdery tannins. While this is built for the long haul, it's much less forbiddingly structured than was once the case for this cuvée. - WA

The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels of 45- and 80-year-old vines on much stonier soils than the Charmes-Chambertin. This has a knockout nose of brambly black fruit, cassis and crushed stone aromas that gain intensity with every swirl of the glass. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and very precise and focused, with great tension toward the shimmering vintage. This is definitely one of the best Mazoyères-Chambertins I have tasted in over ten years of coming to this domaine. - VM

Picked on 29 八月 along with the Charmes-Chambertin. This part of Mazoyères forms a slight hump overlooking its neighbours, catching the wind which concentrates the grapes, according to Loïc. Deep black purple in colour. The bouquet has fascinating smoky notes, reminiscent of the sun baking the stones, yet with crunchy minerals too. Middle to full body yet really well balanced and the acidity is better integrated than for the Charmes. - JM
