It offers up a superb nose of cassis, black raspberries, chocolate, pepper, grilled meats, dark soil tones, just a whisper of oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with still a touch of backend tannin and simply great length and grip on the poised, complex and impeccably balanced finish. A lovely bottle of Hermitage with decades of life still ahead of it. - JG

A late vintage that’s compared to 2013 by Jean-Louis, yet that carried more crop, the 1996 Hermitage is a juicy, medium-bodied effort that’s ready to go. Giving up classic herbed game, bacon fat and sweet fruit, it should continue to evolve gracefully, but there’s no reason to hold off here. (JD) - WA

This was mouthwatering from the start, with white pepper, tobacco, iron and dried currant notes rippling along, showing still-vivacious acidity underneath and a long, mesquite- and cedar-filled finish that has excellent drive. This is a high-acid vintage and stands a bit apart from the flight stylistically. (JM) - WS

Saturated ruby-red. Highly aromatic, pure nose of cassis, Cuban tobacco, mocha, licorice and iris. Supple and fruity in the mouth, with a considerably more floral character than the '97. A distinctly Burgundian as opposed to a more southern style of Hermitage; juicy, violety fruit offers terrific thrust without huge power or weight. Sharply focused flavors. This may well be slower to close up in the bottle than the more powerful '95. - VM
